Sexual health a concern for older men
A online survey done by a health-education portal finds majority of men view sex as an important indicator of health and well-being.
Sexual health is a concern for older men, according to a survey conducted by www.singaporemen.com.sg, a health-education portal for men spearheaded by pharmaceutical company Bayer Healthcare. The online survey, which polled 400 Singaporean men between the ages of 45 and 64, found that over 70 percent of the respondents view sex as “a vital indicator of their health and well-being”.
Half of them rated “maintaining a healthy sex life with their spouse” as important as limiting one’s alcohol intake and stress management. The survey also found that 74 percent wished they had sex at least once a week, but only 49 percent actually did.
Other key results:
• Almost 63 percent said they no longer have the same energy for sex as they used to and are concerned about the decline in sexual fitness as they grow older.
• Close to 60 percent said they are aware that reduced sexual desire is tied to underlying health problems with the top two identified causes being depression and a drop in testosterone levels.
• Almost half or 45 percent said they would speak to their spouse about sexual health problems; 15 percent said they would prefer to look up their problem on the Internet over talking to someone.
The portal is supported by the Singapore Society for Men’s Health, Singapore Urological Association and Health Promotion Board.
