Active Health launches second lab at Bedok to get people to better understand their health and fitness levels.

Active Health, a social movement run by Sport Singapore to encourage Singaporeans to proactively take charge of their health and wellness, has opened its second and largest lab at Heartbeat@Bedok (HBB). The first lab at Our Tampines Hub (OTH) has seen over 1,400 participants taking part in the on-boarding programme since its opening in August last year.

The latest 572 sqm-lab at HBB also offers these on-boarding sessions. An on-boarding session is conducted for up to 20 people who are interested in finding out more about how to manage their health and wellness based on four domains – physical activity, screen time, sleep and nutrition. This hour-long programme helps participants have a better understanding of their current health and fitness levels, and pick up tips on how they can incorporate small improvements to their health habits in daily life.

Participants learn how to measure their own blood pressure, hip-to-waist ratio and also receive a personalised reading of their health parameters using a Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), which assesses body composition such as body fat percentage and muscle mass. Participants also get a taster of basic functional mobility assessments. The on-boarding programme is free-of-charge and is a pre-requisite for subsequent fitness assessments.

By the second quarter of this year, the lab at HBB will have other offerings such functional fitness assessments like a cardio respiratory fitness test, handgrip strength fitness test, functional movement screening and Y-Balance. There will also be themed classes and workshops, and the lab will partner with Health Promotion Board (HPB), for instance, to do the talks. All these sessions (which are currently available at OTH) will include a fee. The Bedok lab is also working with other healthcare partners including at HBB on medical referrals.

The lab is located on two floors of the integrated lifestyle hub. On the fourth floor is the stations where people can measure their grip strength, blood pressure, blood analysis, cardiovascular and metabolic testing under the supervision of the Active Health experts. On the fifth floor which connects directly to ActiveSG’s outdoor swimming pool is used for consultations, workshops and aqua programmes.

This all bodes well for 57-year-old Daniel Lee, who has done an on-boarding session. “I wanted to do a body test and learn some simple exercises such as squats, forward and side lunges, knee lifts and hip rotations. From the assessment, I got to know which area of my body that I needed to work on, and to watch my diet and to exercise regularly and get enough rest. I am trying to eat less meat and more vegetables and fruit, and reduce my snacking.”

The interior designer added: “I have been doing bootcamp and running, and I am disciplining myself to go to bed at 10.30pm and put away my phone 30 minutes before bedtime.”

Active Health is not stopping there. It is planning to launch an app later this year to allow people to get information on Active Health and act as a social app in monitoring themselves as well as their loves ones.

To start your journey to better health and wellness, you can sign up for an on-boarding session by going down to any of the two labs or reserve your time slot at www.myactivesg.com/active-health/lab/appointment/.
