Keeping seniors active and healthy

This Health Promotion Board’s Health Ambassador takes her volunteering duties very seriously.

Patti Ho was recognised at the Singapore HEALTH Award in November 2024 for actively volunteering with HPB to encourage the community to adopt healthier lifestyles.

Patti Ho takes her volunteering duties very seriously, and enjoys motivating seniors to stay active and healthy, and positive. The 81-year-old is in an ideal position to do so as one of Health Promotion Board’s Health Ambassadors (HA). She conducts multiple health initiatives including leading the “7 Sit Down” and “7 Easy Exercises” exercises in hospitals, active ageing centres and community roadshows.

The mother of five shared: “Many seniors start with the mindset that they ‘cannot’ do things because of their age. They often say, “I’m old already, my bones cannot, this cannot, that cannot”. However, I make it a point to show them that limitations can be overcome. For example, in my class, there are participants with mobility issues, but they still participate. I use these individuals as examples to inspire others.”

She added: “I believe that active ageing is about balancing physical activity, social engagement, and a positive mindset. Staying physically active is important, but equally crucial is finding joy in what you do. That’s why I always make sure my classes are engaging and fun, so participants enjoy themselves and keep coming back.”

Adding her own touches

Before retiring in 1998, Patti was the national sales manager of Tupperware Singapore. She left as she wanted to care for her husband who was at the time unwell. It was during 2011 volunteering at Tsao Foundation, when she was introduced to the non-profit organisation’s chair exercise programme called “Lala workout”, which was designed for immobile seniors.

She started facilitating these exercises and even took it upon herself to evolve the workouts, incorporating them into her own approach. Over time, she developed her own version of these exercises which she called “Patxercise” or Patti’s exercise. This passion for helping seniors stay active led her to become a HA. Her sessions at the various locations incorporate a mix of physical exercises, stretching routines and even, creative activities such as singing to keep participants engaged. Besides that, she also mentors new HAs, helping them learn how to encourage and support seniors to lead healthier lives.

Beyond conducting her sessions, she also educates seniors on age-related health conditions and imparts health tips so they can better manage their health including about nutrition, sleep hygiene and mental well-being. Said Patti, “My goal is not just to get seniors moving but to build a strong sense of community, where they feel supported and motivated to sustain an active lifestyle.”

She conducts her exercise classes three to five days a week, with usually about 15 seniors participating in each class. “These classes are designed to be fun and engaging, and I have also created my own songs that motivate and encourage seniors to exercise.”

Motivated by her participants

Patti gives her all as a HA as she is spurred on by the many memorable moments she has encountered. “One of the most memorable moments for me is helping seniors feel at ease and building trust with them. Some are hesitant to try new exercises, but I take the time to connect with them and earn their trust. Seeing them open up, join regularly, and even bring their friends and neighbours along is incredibly rewarding. It’s like fostering the ‘kampung spirit’ in the community.”

She added: “I’ve always believed in empowering others. When I see seniors who are confident and willing to help, I encourage them to take on roles in facilitating sessions. Watching them step up, build connections within the group, and even join as HAs themselves reminds me that every small effort can lead to a ripple effect of positive change.”

Walking the talk

She also inspires others by walking the talk. Besides staying active being a HA, she prioritises a balanced diet, proper hydration, and getting enough rest. “I also make sure to stay socially engaged by spending time with my family and having lunch with them over the weekends. I also maintain a strong network of friends and fellow HAs. These activities not only keep me physically active but also mentally stimulated and emotionally fulfilled.”

Another thing she believes in is to continuously learn and adapt. Patti said: “As we age, our bodies change, and we need to be open to modifying our routines to stay active in a way that works for us.

“Even at my age, I embrace learning. I recently learnt how to use ChatGPT because I believe in keeping up with new technologies. Staying curious and continuously challenging yourself mentally is just as important as physical activity.”

She added: “Some of my participants [in the exercise sessions] told me, “Patti, when I grow old, I want to be like you”. Hearing that touched me because it means that my efforts are making an impact, not just in helping them stay active, but in inspiring them to take ownership of their health and well-being.”

So what other advice can she give to seniors? “My advice to seniors is to stay active, stay connected, and stay open to learning new things. It’s never too late to start taking care of your health, and even small steps can make a big difference. Surround yourself with a supportive community, whether it’s through exercise groups, volunteering, or just engaging with friends and family.

“Most importantly, don’t let age be a barrier. I’ve seen so many seniors who initially thought they couldn’t do something, only to surprise themselves with how much they were capable of. Confidence and consistency are key – keep moving, keep learning, and most of all, keep enjoying life!”
