Let’s makan!
A new initiative bonds seniors and youths over their favourite meal.
Food has a lovely way of bringing people together. That is exactly what a new initiative called ‘Makan with Seniors’ started by Ageless Online and FACEUP hopes to do – bring together 15 youths with 15 seniors over their favourite meal.
Founder of Ageless Online and FACEUP, Eleanor Yap, explained: “The idea of ‘Makan with Seniors’ came from an initiative called ‘Feast with Strangers’ by Oxford historian Theodore Zeldin, which is being held all around the world. However, I have decided to focus on seniors and incorporated some of my own ideas to bring youths and seniors together for conversations and to celebrate seniors’ life stories.”
These conversations will be helped through a menu which has a list of questions for the seniors to answer including their memories of WWII, recollecting of local events that impacted them and sharing of their growing up years. “I hope that through these simple conversations, there will be more understanding between the generations. We can breakdown stereotypes, gain new friendships and just have fun,” shared Eleanor.
The first ‘Makan with Seniors’ will be held on May 19 at the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) and is supported by the Relationship Banking group. If you would like to sign up, please e-mail us at: eleanor@agelessonline.net. It is first-come, first-served basis.
