50plus EXPO, Singapore’s largest expo for seniors, which will be held from May 15 to 17, 2015 (postponed from the March dates as a mark of respect to the passing of Lee Kuan Yew), will have lots in store for seniors.

Hosted by the Council for Third Age (C3A) and organised by Pico Art International, the 50plus EXPO aims to promote active ageing among seniors by providing a host of informative forum talks, hands-on workshops, educational activities and holistic product offerings.

C3A’s CEO Soh Swee Ping said, “Seniors today are more active compared with 50 years ago. In those days when survival was imperative, many seniors concentrated on providing and taking care of the family. Today, our seniors are able to find, engage and participate in activities that they enjoy or take on new interests to lead a fulfilling and active lifestyle.

“At 50plus EXPO 2015, we encourage seniors to join in the various programmes specially planned for them. They can discover something new, be it a hobby, skill, knowledge on their well-being or even make new friends!”

Catering to those currently or transiting into their Third Age, the 50plus EXPO will feature forum talks covering a wide extent of topics relevant for seniors. There will be a total of 30 such forum talks; interested members of the public can register for them online at www.50plussingapore.com.

Visitors can look forward to getting up close and personal with well-known celebrities who will share their experiences on embracing active ageing including veteran actress Koh Chieng Mun, MediaCorp artiste Chen Shucheng, and Singapore’s popular comedic duo, Mark Lee and Suhaimi Yusof.

Embarking on an active ageing journey

One of the highlights at the 50plus EXPO is the Public Education (PE) Zone that is segmented into four distinct zones – LIFE which stands for Live, Inspire, Fulfil and Enjoy. Each zone carries a meaningful message with relevant activities to demonstrate the various ways to embrace active ageing.

• Live zone
– The Live zone encourages seniors to enjoy every achievement on life’s exciting journey. The stage area will feature live shows, performances as well as intimate sharing sessions by the celebrities.

• Inspire zone
– The message here to seniors is to be an engaged, dynamic and inspiring Third Ager. Visitors can explore taking up volunteerism to continue contributing to the better of Singapore’s society, learn how to create video blogs and use social media applications to enhance the quality of their daily lives.

Fulfil zone
– Continued learning allows seniors to feel empowered and fulfilled, keeping their minds and bodies engaged. This zone will feature an array of activities that are easy and interesting for seniors to pick up. They include Batik painting, palm leaf weaving and Chinese calligraphy, playing the ukulele, crepe making and demonstrations on incorporating nature’s super foods for a nutritious diet.

• Enjoy zone
– Having fun is not limited by age! Seniors can try their hand at plasticine art and vertical gardening. They can also bond with their children and grandchildren by learning simple and beautiful food art that they can easily create at home. Taking care of their body can be a satisfying experience as well with resistance band training and basic grooming workshop.

There will be an exciting feature of Augmented Reality (AR) at the Enjoy zone. Using cutting-edge technology, seniors can enjoy the AR experience and take photos with realistic graphics like in a real-world environment.
