Protect yourself from dengue
Dengue infections are on the rise so find out what you can do.
Besides worrying about getting COVID-19, we now have to contend with dengue. According to a news article, dengue infections are on the rise with over 500 cases a week and at least seven people have died this year in Singapore. Of those who have passed, they were between 60 and 80 years of age and lived or worked within the dengue clusters, according to the National Environmental Agency (NEA).
So, what can you do to protect yourself and loved ones? Here are some tips from NEA. You can also view more on their website at: www.nea.gov.sg/dengue-zika/prevent-aedes-mosquito-breeding.
- Check your home and corridor or garden for areas and items that can collect water every alternate day. Get rid of any stagnant water, remove potential breeding grounds, store away items under shelter and apply sand granular insecticide when needed. Common breeding habitats are:
- Pail and pail rims
- Flower pot plates
- Vases, plant bowls
- Watering cans
- Unused toilet bowls and sinks
- Dish rack trays
- Spray insecticide in places where adult mosquitos tend to rest and hide, such as dark corners, behind and underneath beds and furniture, and on curtains.
- The Aedes mosquito is a day biter. Apply insect repellent during the day.
