App that checks blood pressure launched
The Singapore Heart Foundation’s app reminds, records, tracks and shares blood pressure readings at one’s convenience.

The Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF) with the Nanyang Polytechnic’s (NYP) School of IT has developed the BP (blood pressure) Matters app, which was launched recently during the annual World Heart Day 2016. The app reminds, records and tracks those with high blood pressure at home, and shares their readings with their doctors during their check-ups.
In Singapore, high blood pressure or what is called hypertension affects one in four Singaporeans, and is one of the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of hypertension increases markedly from age 40 onwards, and more than half (53.4 percent) of the elderly aged 60 to 69 years has hypertension. Furthermore, heart diseases and stroke combined, accounted for about one-third (29.6 percent) of all deaths in 2015.

Dr Tan Yong Seng, vice-chairman of SHF and organising chairperson of National Heart Week/World Heart Day 2016, said, “Monitoring and maintaining good blood pressure reading (less than 130/80 mmHg) is important for patients with high blood pressure and also at-risk individuals, because high blood pressure typically does not exhibit any symptoms.
“With the BP Matters app that charts the blood pressure readings, doctors can better determine if treatments are working and helps eliminate any false reading taken one-time at the clinic,” he shared.
