Relay for Life (RFL) 2017, a 17-hour event, brings the community together to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease and fight back against a disease that has taken so much. Organised by the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS), this inaugural event will take place on February 18 and 19, 2017 at Bukit Gombak Stadium and the opening ceremony will be graced by guest-of-honour, Minister of Health Gan Kim Yong.

Relay For Life is a global movement founded in May 1985 by the American Cancer Society in Tacoma, Washington. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide event with 24 other countries participating and close to four million participants across the globe annually.

RFL will have three highlights:

  • Survivors Lap – All cancer survivors at the event will take the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while being cheered on by the other participants who line the track. There will also be a caregiver lap where we recognise and celebrate caregivers, who take care of their family and friends during the cancer journey, and the community lap where we thank those for giving love and support to cancer patients.
  • Luminaria Ceremony – This will take place after dark where candles will be lit to remember those who have fought and lost the cancer journey and also to support those whose fight continues. The lighted candles will be placed around the relay track as glowing tributes to those who have been affected by cancer.
  • Fight Back Ceremony – The ceremony will inspire relay participants to take action. It symbolises the emotional commitment each of us can make in the fight against cancer – how we can take action and spread awareness of cancer research, treatment and prevention.

With the goal of uniting people who have experienced cancer – be it as a patient, survivor, caregiver, family or friend, this first RFL aims to raise S$800,000 to fund the various SCS programmes and services. The event is targeting 9,000 participants over three time slots – 5pm to 8pm (February 18, 2017), 8pm to 6am (overnight) and 6am to 10am (February 19, 2017). There will also be other family activities and performances throughout the overnight event.

The normal registration rate is S$25 (5pm to 8pm (February 18, 2017)), S$20 (overnight) and S$25 (6am to 10am (February 19, 2017)). For those 65 and above, the rate is S$15 for each of the three time slots.
