Singapore National Eye Centre marks 20th National Eye Care Day.

To mark the 20th National Eye Care Day, the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) will be offering free functional screenings, eye screenings and eye care talks on November 16, 2019 at participating hospitals, including the eye departments of Changi General Hospital, Sengkang General Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, National University Hospital and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. The event, “Eye Care for All”, is organised to reach out to more Singaporeans on the importance of eye health and care.

Held annually since 1990, the National Eye Care Day is jointly organised by the eye departments of Government restructured hospitals from various healthcare clusters who come together in a bid to improve the public’s understanding of eye health and to improve the eye care landscape in Singapore. With ageing population on the rise in Singapore, age-related eye diseases such as cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy will become more prevalent.

In recognising the paramount importance of creating access to eye care and instilling the knowledge and awareness of eye care locally, the 20th National Eye Care Day will be conducting free functional screenings at SNEC for the first 200 participants, a new offering for this year’s programme. Eligible for Singaporeans aged 60 years and above, functional screening is a simple and pain-free check-up that helps to detect age-related conditions in seniors’ vision, hearing and oral health.

SNEC will also be setting-up eye screening stations for seniors aged 60 and above who have diabetes and are currently not consulting an eye doctor to help them detect diabetes-related eye diseases. There will also be free eye screenings eligible at selected participating hospitals for seniors aged 60 and above and are currently not consulting an eye doctor. To improve the public’s understanding of the importance of eye health and diseases, free public talks will be conducted to delve deeper into topics such as cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, other common eye conditions and eye care.
