Mobile access for seniors
Assistance to those who need support to obtain smartphone and mobile plans.
The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has come up with a scheme called the Mobile Access for Seniors which provides financial help to eligible seniors who need support to obtain smartphone and mobile plans. This scheme supports the Seniors Go Digital programme, which includes clinics and webinars.
There are certain criteria to be eligible for the scheme such as being a Singapore citizen, being 60 years and above, a current beneficiary of the selected Government assistance scheme such as MSF’s ComCare Long Term Assistance, and is not an existing IMDA Home Access beneficiary who has received a smartphone. Other criteria: Seniors need to have attended IMDA’s Seniors Go Digital – learning programme, and picked up at least one basic digital skill at the SG Digital community hubs such as basic digital communication skills, navigating Government digital services, or transacting with e-payments.
So how can seniors apply? You may approach IMDA’s Digital Ambassadors at any of the SG Digital community hubs located at selected community clubs/centres and public libraries (opening in phases starting July 2020) after attending IMDA’s Seniors Go Digital – learning programme and picking up at least one basic digital skill. These Ambassadors will reach out to and raise the digital skills of 100,000 seniors by March 2021, up from the current annual target of 10,000 seniors reached through one-to-one skilling efforts.
If the seniors are eligible for the scheme, they may enjoy the following subsidised product and service:
- One-year mobile plan, at S$5 per month.
- Smartphone, starting from S$20 (one-time cost).
The subsidised plan will come with:
- Free SIM card registration;
- Free caller ID;
- Unlimited incoming local calls;
- Continued mobile data connectivity, with no excess data charges; and
- Other value-added services.
