Seniors will learn how to use popular digital services in libraries as part of the new Library Learning Journey, a free digital literacy programme. The National Library Board (NLB) will hold the first of such monthly sessions at 25 of its public libraries from late February onwards. Led by Digital Ambassadors, seniors will learn to access and use eNewspapers, Wireless@SGx, QR codes, and the revamped NLB mobile app which was released recently.

The Library Learning Journey was jointly developed with the Infocomm Media Development Authority and the SG Digital Office, as part of the guided learning journeys for the Seniors Go Digital programme in the 56 SG Digital community hubs across Singapore.

“For people like my grandparents who are less accustomed to doing things through their phones, making many digital changes at once can feel overwhelming. I have enjoyed helping them and others embrace the unexpected changes we have faced during this period,” said Tan Nian Guan Colin, Digital Ambassador at Bukit Batok Public Library.

Seniors will be able to put their newly-acquired digital skills to use within the library space, with Digital Ambassadors close by to guide them along. The Library Learning Journey joins NLB’s wide range of initiatives to champion reading, lifelong learning and create an inclusive digital society. The revamped mobile app is part of this effort, and will provide a smoother user experience, personalised reading recommendations and the ability to spotlight three favourite libraries to quickly check the availability of items or to make a reservation. Existing app users can enjoy the new features by updating their NLB mobile app while new users can download the app at https://mobileapp.nlb.gov.sg.

Each Library Learning Journey will take about one hour, and will be conducted in line with safe management measures due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. Interested participants can approach any of the Digital Ambassadors in the SG Digital community hubs to register their interest. They can also call 6377 3800 or visit the SG Digital Office website (www.sdo.gov.sg) for more information. The schedule of Library Learning Journeys at public libraries can be found at: www.imda.gov.sg/en/seniorsgodigital/Learn/Guided-Learning/Learning-Journeys.
