Sensitive teeth

A concentrated calcium technology gives relief to sensitivity.

Sensodyne has introduced the new Complete Protection toothpaste (left), which combines all the benefits of a daily toothpaste with the advanced NovaMin technology. This concentrated calcium technology helps relieve pain of sensitivity by building a protective layer over vulnerable areas of the tooth. This formulation requires users to brush twice a day for maximum pain relief from dentine hypersensitivity.

Almost one in two people in Singapore suffer from symptoms of teeth sensitivity and experts predict that it could rise to five percent annually. It is characterised by short, sharp pain caused when the softer part of the tooth that lies underneath the dentine becomes exposed by enamel wear or gum recession. When exposed dentine comes into contact with hot or cold, sweet or sour, or even your toothbrush, it can trigger the nerve inside your tooth and cause discomfort.

Tooth sensitivity can be a sign that your teeth are vulnerable and, if untreated, can worsen over time. The condition can lead to behavioural changes, such as compromised brushing technique and avoidance of certain food and drinks due to fear of pain. Over-vigorous brushing or periodontal diseases may put patients at risk of gingival recession.

The toothpaste comes in two flavours – Complete Protection regular (100g at S$8.90) and extra fresh (100g at S$9.30). Both are available island-wide at pharmacies and supermarkets.

Due to exposure of nerves of tooth, dentin sensitivity occurs. It must be prevented or treated to protect teeth from further loss. Maintaining proper oral health may cure this. Informative writing!
